I almost did not read this book because of a one star review by a person who was disappointed by it. But, I trusted the author to uphold the quality of the first two volumes and found myself richly rewarded by a fascinating tale of one of history's most interesting times. Detailed and endlessly informative of the politics, relationships and human flaws of those in power--or seeking power, we are reminded of the centuries-long lessons of religious bigotry and utter cruelty of those who would pretend to speak for God. We still live in times which require tolerance and religious humility. A life-changing book I highly recommend.
