I came to this late, but instantly fell in love with it. The 50s setting and costumes, the superb performances from the leading actors to the tiniest cameos, it's class all the way. And then there's the writing, black, funny, Jewish wit, that switches from out loud laughter to tear inducing pathos. Can't wait for series 4

I was gripped from start to finish. Almost gave it a miss after conflicting reviews. Yes it entertains while dealing with the tragedy that accompanied partition, and the romance is slightly contrived especially towards the end, but it's a commercial film, not a documentary. If the historical facts are accurate it's a shameful blot on Britain's past. My parents and aunts lived through this, though they weren't affected by it.
