Spoilers ahead…
Do NOT show this movie to your kids
I absolutely adored the guardians series before this movie. It had been my favorite of all the marvel movies. But this was just another level of bad, even by recent marvel standards. I have so many issues to take with it I don’t even know where to begin.
The animals. Oh god the animals. It was so disturbing! I cannot fathom why this is a pg-13 movie with the stuff they showed. Animal experimentation and abuse, cold-blooded murder of sweet and kind characters, brutal killing of animals and gore on a new level. This was overwhelmingly disturbing and call me a wimp but I found it really hard to enjoy watching sweet little animals get shot in the back.
Moving past that, the plot was mediocre. The whole story of rocket was a great idea but I feel like it was drawn out in a way that just felt sluggish and forced. Don’t get me wrong it was interesting, but I feel like 2 and a half hours was way too much for this movie. Anyways about the plot, it just wasn’t the best. I know it’s setting things up for the future blah blah blah but there wasn’t much new happening in the movie. It was shaky, that’s about all I have to say about it.
Marvel is going darker lately with the movies but I don’t see the need to have the heroes suffering injuries and nearly dying every other minute. Nobody wants to see their favorite hero get shot in the chest. I don’t care that it’s more realistic to what the fights would be like, it is just upsetting. If I was a 13 year old rocket fanboy and I had to watch him dying the whole movie I would not have had a good times. Or what if I liked drax? Watching him get thrown and shot in the chest and nearly die would have been traumatic. There was so much unnecessary violence. The drawn out slo-mo fight scene where a pigs head gets ripped off and carried around was just brutal.
Final perception of this movie was that it was made with a lot of excess. The direction marvel is going with this and multiverse of madness is disturbing and upsetting. Superhero movies are not horror. They can be, sure, but why does it have to be these ones. Marvel is supposed to be different than a Batman movie. If I saw a new Batman come out with some of the same things as this one, I would not have that many bad things to say. But seeing a marvel movie in one of the more light-hearted series in marvels past have the level of gore and brutality that this movie had was shocking. The animal stuff was entirely unnecessary and honestly sort of haunting. I will not be watching this movie again ever. One this that can be said for it was that the music was good. I hope that marvel does not continue in this direction with the movies because I can only walk out of so many theaters with a headache and a sense of disappointment before I start to think I’m wasting my time and money. A man can dream, but whatever they are doing I won’t be able to stop. Never thought I’d have to say I was disappointed with a guardians movie but here we are. It brought me low enough to write a google review about it so that’s pretty bad. I hope others liked it more than me at least, and I hope for the future of marvel to be brighter than this.
