I sincerely doubt fans of the original are the ones review bombing this. It's far more likely young wannabe edgelords (who are totally ignorant of the significance of the original) who are 'downvoting' for BS political reasons.
Anyhow...
The writing in the 80's might not have been stellar by today's standards. However, it did up the ante on other "Saturday morning toy commercial" cartoons with the help of writers like D. C. Fontana and J. Michael Straczynski. Kevin Smith pays homage to those writers (and that historical attention to quality) by raising the bar again.
...and it worked SO well!
The expectation subversion and modernization of the franchise might not be for everyone but for genuine fans hooked by the premise enough to stick through the first six episodes, it 100% pays off.
I initially started watching this on a whim figuring it would be a schlocky bit of nostalgia. I was pleased to discover that I actually gave a damn about the premise and the characters after the first episode. I was sincerely caught off guard and genuinely emotionally impacted by developments. Also, I know enough to recognize that those developments could have felt tropey or cliche'd if they had been presented more traditionally.
So, yeah, hats off to Kevin Smith for doing a frickin' amazing job with his story craft here! He and his team put the work in and handled this with the love and dedication of a genuine fans.
I absolutely look forward to the next six episodes!
