I watched this film oh so many years ago but its sweetness, tenderness, and hopefulness (a hopefulness just short of the profound but that suggests that life can be profoundly good) - its spell has never left me. I am now, bedridden, but delighted to find myself making a list of movies that I love and that fit in with a genre this movie created in my soul. I am calling this list of favorite movies (that were inspired by ‘Before Sunrise’)- Favorite Visual Movies as Paintings. The next movie listed after this one is not its sequel (which did touch me) but a more recent gem titled, ‘A Chance Encounter” with Paul Peterson and Andrea Von Kampen, directed by perhaps reasonably panned by critics but a new favorite of mine. I mention both movies as movies of a delicate and suggestive artform for personal journeys - not at all about the full or cleverly multilevel of development of the characters nor by either a finished message or completely filled out ending. No, these films are beautiful, nearly ephemeral watercolor paintings for me. I think that I will list them in my collection of fine paintings by Cezzane, Picasso, Van Gogh or of the great statuary of Rodin and Michaelangelo. In short, I have loved the movie, “Before Sunrise” for an entire life just as one loves a great painting.
