The book has some helpful suggestions for helping readers become more aware of how they use their time and for what reason. Its criticism of the tyranny of unrealistic work ethics is particularly insightful and challenging. On the other hand, its sharp criticism of faith traditions that include hope that death is not the end of life reveals a simplistic understanding of that hope. The book adopts Marx's opinion of religion as the opiate of the people, intending to minimize the value of this life in view a better afterlife. Rather, authentic hope expresses confidence that life is one process of growth, both now and after death. The book also tends toward the anodyne in a self-help kind of way.
