This book explores fantasy baseball in a way that no other novel does. J. Henry Waugh, toiling in a tedious job by day, hanging in dive bars with B girls at night, has created his own baseball league that he plays by himself.
Rookies come up and develop (or don't), and he meticulously keeps stats, standings, and season histories. His idle thoughts are about good names to give rookies, and whether he could ever introduce others to his game.
The obsession runs deep. He plays to deal with the sadness and loneliness in his life.
As someone who plays an elaborate baseball simulation myself (Strat-O-Matic), I found this book a compelling read. A home run!
