Absolutely stellar from start to finish, WOW. It’s pretty easy for me to confidently say “Scott pilgrim vs the world” 💣 places amongst my favourite works of all time both in film & comic book fiction. 🔥 The original 2010 film directed & written by Edgar Wright & Bryan Lee O’ Malley is something that is very special to me. Needless to say I feel it’s an absolute cult classic that was majorly underrated by every stretch of the imagination for so long before it got its huge popularity. 🎸🎶✨
I am here and pleased to say that the new Netflix anime “Scott Pilgrim Takes off” is more than extraordinarily pulled off. ⚡️ it’s vibe & style is essentially ripped entirely out of volumes 1-6 of the graphic novels.
8 episodes + whilst having the entire voiced cast back for the new show, is absolutely unbelievable. It’s as if if I’ve almost been transported back into 2010 for the first time, seeing the film up on the big screen back in anime format.
I genuinely may have shed a tear seeing this show end, because I did not want it to. I always felt the melancholic tone did even more justice than originally intended. Every single episode carries beautifully coloured animation from a Japanese company called Science Saru who pulled off such creative art & style with every single character in the Scott pilgrim universe.
If there’s any companion that was destined to be made in servicing contrast to the source material (graphic novels & video game/film) that actually enhances the viewing/lore experience it’s this! It’s layered with love & care for the audience and respects all of the lovely & not so loving characters created by Bryan, whilst, even adding in more layered storytelling not ever seen before with unexpected ones. We don’t like spoilers here and utterly respect the creatives who even made this show possible, when all looked dim for new Scott pilgrim shieet. Needless to say there are some serious references & cool Easter eggs that are plastered very carefully in this one too not just from the original film, so lookout!
Honestly, can’t credit these bloody Legends Edgar Wright, Bryan Lee O’ Malley, Ben DavidGrobinski & the entire cast & crew of the show, really deserve so much praise for absolutely nailing it once again.
I love that “Scott Pilgrim takes off” is a Netflix adaption that can (like the movie) still purposely pull into the audience cringe, meta content & make me laugh beside it all the way through. The shows music is also brilliant. 2010 featured a master soundtrack & OST composed by Nigel Goodrich is done justice with a brand new soundtrack, composed by Anamanaguchi, Joe Trapanese, and even Sex Bob-Omb themselves! I stand here after having seen the original film more than 60 times, over the past 13 years. Yet, I still consider it to be amongst the greatest comic book/game film's ever made. I’m happy to say that I feel now the anime has tied it together as one.
Maybe I’m sentimental and I definitely don’t want to speak on behalf of the man himself, but from watching many BTS commentaries & older archived vids, i always felt and told many of my friends that “Scott Pilgrim Vs The World” felt like it was Edgar’s most personal and proudest cinematic accomplishment amongst all his other brilliantly crafted out gems.
