The Fabelmans is a beautifully made film about the young Sam Fabelman who discovers and develops a love and passion for movie making at an early age. Spielberg overlays the plot with what I assume to be flashbacks of personal experience to produce an exquisite period snapshot of the USA of the 50s and 60s. The Fabelmans is also the story of the trials and tribulations of a talented yet complicated family, weaving an increasingly entangled web of identities and relationships. As with many of his films, Spielberg reveals a love and respect for his Jewish roots and has nothing to hide. This film is a rollercoaster of emotions with just the right amount of humor and nostalgia peppered in.
Great character portrayals all round, but Michelle Williams (Sam's piano-playing mom) gives a stellar performance. The Fabelmans is a must see.
