I decided to read this book a few months ago because I am interested in WWII history. I was curious about learning about POW camps during WWII, since they are rarely talked about in comparison to the Holocaust. I picked up this book, expecting to get an in-depth depiction of life inside a Japanese POW camp. I didn't realize what I was in for.
"Unbroken" is so much more than that, as it tells the unbelievable true story of Olympic athlete, Louis Zamperini. "Unbroken" is one of, if not, the best books I have ever read. Louis Zamperini has such an unbelievable and incredible life story. "Unbroken" is such a powerful tale of endurance and survival and forgiveness. It is very eye-opening on many levels. This book is gut-wrenching to read at times, as Louis was brutally and mercilessly tortured during his time in the POW camp, but this is what makes its ending so sweet and something that will stick with readers for a long time.
I personally do not cry in books at all. I tell people that if a book makes me cry, it's an EXTREMELY good book. In the end of "Unbroken," when Louis fully surrendered his life to God and forgave the Japanese guards who had tortured him in the POW camp, it was such a raw, powerful, and sweet moment in the book that it made me cry like a baby. It made me challenge my own Christian faith and it gave me a new perspective on forgiveness. It made me realize that no man can truly free himself from his burdens until he surrenders himself fully to God. I got so much more than just another WWII history lesson. I was given a spiritual lesson on the power of forgiveness and I learned more about the beauty of God's grace through this man's unique and powerful testimony.
"Unbroken" is an extraordinary true story about an incredible man who suffered so much and eventually found faith in Christ and discovered the healing power of forgiveness. Zamperini's story is one that everyone should read at least once in their life.
