Based on the trailer for the game it seemed there would be more of an emphasis on story. However there is little to non and you shouldn't purchase this expecting more. The story boils down to "Illager do bad things, go stop Illager from doing bad things". The ending and the way they setup the story for future DLC is dumb and made me feel as if the time I spent building and grinding for gear and levels was for nothing. They could have brought unique Minecraft-like ideas to the ARPG genre by implementing some type of crafting/mining system. Instead of a blacksmith showing up after the first level with a fully built forge they could have made it where you need to clear out a mine in order for the blacksmith to get materials so new weapons could be crafted and bought or clear out a forest so new buildings could be built. Could've seen the camp buildings progress and get built as you progress through the story. However there was no time for this as the base game is incredibly short (not including secret levels and the higher difficulties). Instead your camp is left looking the exact same as when you started.
While you won't find much depth in gameplay/story the beautiful world and Minecraft charm can suck you in for hours of monster killing dungeon crawling fun. It's a great time killer if you're a fan of the genre and Minecraft. I really enjoyed the new weapons, blocks, and mobs in this and hope some of them will make their way over to Java and Bedrock Edition.
