I was looking forward to WoT, having loved the books. I went into the series understanding that there would be changes, just like GoT. I was not prepared for the absolute travesty that WoT on Amazon is. The story does not remotely follow even the intent or general outline of the books. One small example is the constant suggestion that the Dragon Reborn could be a female, that Liandrin is the leader of the red Ajah, that Min is from the Borderlands, and these I mentioned as examples to prevent spoilers.
Let’s talk casting….The villagers, except one, are descended from Mantheren, and live in a famously remote ‘down country’ location called the Two Rivers. Farmers, sheepherders and tobacco exporters that live a simple life unbothered by the outside world. In the show, you would think they lived in Greenwich Village. The racial diversity is lol over the top. Perrin (unmarried and 18) with shaggy hair, half a head shorter than Rand and 1.5 times as wide as most, is now married and Black. Now, I understand that 15% of Americans are Black, and Hollywood strives to be diverse, but there are many characters in the books that are not white. Cut and paste for Egwene and Nynaeve. The people of Mantheren were white, with darker hair and eyes, average height. Lan, who is a big dude with a face of all hard planes and angles was not to likely to be Asian. I could live with that choice if the actor was remotely like Lan.
Everywhere in Amazons WoT, they go out of their way to cast characters with only diversity in mind, and they also take liberties with characters sexual preferences. Remember, this was a time and place, especially the Two Rivers, that was not socially sophisticated. There are plenty of big cities, and interesting characters in the books. There are people from across the ocean, and the other side of the Spine of the World. They could have introduced diversity with patience, while keeping truer to the books. Instead, they chose to rush their Woke agenda on the audience and destroy what could have rivaled GoT.
I am going to re read the first four books to purge this travesty from my memory. To Amazon, please leave your political agenda out of the business of entertainment.
