WARNING - This is 100.5 minutes of your life that you will never get back. The overall runtime was 102 minutes but watching the title character regenerating after getting mowed down by a car was entertaining enough that I’ll give it a 90 second credit for that scene. On the other hand, that scene was also in the trailer so maybe we’ll still call it a total waste to actually hit “Play”.
It was obvious that no one involved in this production from a writing, editing, or directing perspective was interested in putting forth any effort beyond the bare minimum to collect a paycheck, which is too bad because, with just a tiny bit more effort on the screenplay and dialog, it could have been a fun, tongue-in-cheek way to kill an evening. The overall premise was fun and Stallone was a perfect fit for the washed up, antisocial, navel-gazing superhero.
Instead, I was ready to kill the character Sam myself after he was taken hostage by the bad guys (and girl). In lieu of any actual effort by the writer or director to give any depth to the character of Sam, they simply had him scream “Let me go” about 20 times Even a stream of interesting teenage profanity or a couple of kicks in the nads would have been less irritating.
So, do yourself a favor and instead spend the evening reorganizing your sock drawer or cleaning out the glove compartment in your car.
