I wasn't expecting to be hooked to this series! I really thought it was some action thriller version of the cleaner who cleans up dead bodies and gets paid for the excellent job and her discretion.
Well, this was something else. It brought back memories of sneaking out in the dead of night while Dad was in a drunken state to catch a taxi to some place safe to sleep. Mum had bruises on her face. I asked her why she put her make up on funny. Seeing other children at shelters, some withdrawn, some who couldn't talk, one peed himself, I learnt as an adult that this is trauma. I remember Mum not having enough money to feed us because Dad did a 4 day bender and didn't buy us groceries. Had no food for two days and like Christmas a box of food was delivered to us and it had different types of canned and preserved foods Id never seen or tasted before. I thought we were special to get those boxes and later learnt it was for families in need.
They made this series well and relatable. I love the connection Alex has to her Mother and the dedication to her daughter Maddy. As a adult I recognise a lot of what Alex portrays as experiences my own Mother went through. Truly amazing survivors to thrivers. I was impressed by the set up at the shelter, where we went wasn't as flash.
I hope they allow teen students to watch this as a class study so they can learn as young adults how to identify toxic, unsafe behaviour and not feel “stuck” or helpless to get out. That type of abusive behaviour shouldn't be normalised and to often children learn from what they see around them.
I have such respect for my Mum and all others who do what they can in these circumstances. I now want to read the book Stephanie Land wrote that the series was based on.
