I used to watch the show years ago and felt that Dr Phil was truly invested in getting help for his guests and his counsel was always on point. I've just retired and started watching again and must say I am very disappointed. As others have mentioned, there is much more commercial time than anything else. After a couple of poignant sentences, it's "We'll be right back with.... after the break." Usually the guests are also offered 10 sessions of virtual counseling with Dr on Demand which Dr Phil always notes was created by him & one of his sons. (Another "commercial)
In addition, on several shows, there is a short segment for skin care products touted as help for a virtual audience member who ends up getting a years worth of product for their skin "problem". And he always plugs Robin's podcast on each & every episode. (more commercials)
Lastly I have also noticed something that I find very offputting. On every show, the camera includes shots of Robin & she seems to be advertising expensive designer items because the logo is very prominently displayed either on a piece of clothing or recently for example, a big Gucci barrette. I'm not trying to imply that there is anything wrong with designer items but it just seems to be very prominent & 'in your face".
