Movie Review: Kalki 2898 AD (English Translation)
Director: Nag Ashwin
Personal Rating: 5/10
Success or Failure?
I hope many of you can guess by looking at the ratings. Now, let's get into the details of the movie. Firstly, this review contains spoilers, so watch the movie before reading further.
Negatives:
* Movie falls short of expectations: The movie doesn't live up to the hype created by the makers.
* Cameos: These were completely unnecessary additions to the movie.
* Acting: Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan are the only saving graces in terms of acting. The rest of the cast didn't put in much effort.
* VFX and CGI: Not as impressive as what was shown in the trailer.
* Costumes and Weapons: This department did a poor job. The costumes look cheap and the weapons are unrealistic for a sci-fi movie.
* Set Design: Good in most places, but the Mahabharata scene and the first duel location are questionable.
* Screenplay: The plot has holes and inconsistencies.
* Cinematography: Inconsistent quality throughout the movie.
Positives:
* VFX Quality: Good for an Indian movie, except for movies by S.S. Rajamouli.
* Amitabh Bachchan: Perfectly cast in his role.
* Villain: Kamal Haasan is a perfect fit for the role.
* Prabhas: Shows improvement in acting compared to his previous performances.
* Successful Sci-Fi Movie: Kalki is a successful attempt at a first Indian sci-fi movie.
Overall Opinion:
The movie is a mixed bag of good and bad elements. While the execution falls short in many areas, it's a decent effort for a first attempt at a sci-fi movie in Indian cinema. Hopefully, the director will learn from these mistakes and make improvements in future films.
