I loved it. The protagonist's unflinching professional loyalty as a soldier to a cause he does not believe in, fatalism in the face of its defeat, faith in God and devotion to the Church while serving an anti-Catholic government and love of his broken family are very moving. Life is often very complicated and must be faced with courage if possible. This novel is about someone who had what it takes. It's also the story of someone who could only have been Spanish for reasons I cannot articulate.
