Content warning: ableism. If it could be rated 0 stars I would.
This movie is extremely ableist and harmful towards the community it is said to represent.
It show cases a neurotypical actress (Maddie), where this would have been an amazing opportunity to showcase an autistic actor/ actress. Further, the way Maddie moves during the film can be seen as harmful, or even offensive, and plays on extreme stereotypes.
The movie includes scenes which feature bright colours and lights which may leave members of the disabled community feeling uncomfortable or over stimulated.
During the movie, restraints are used to hold Maddie down during a "meltdown", these holds are extremely dangerous and have been known to lead to severe risk of injury and fatality. These restraints should NEVER have been featured in the film.
In the movie, Autism is showcased as an issue which needs to be fixed; and disability is used in the film to make non-disabled people feel "good" and "inspired", without thought or care for how it will impact those watching with disablities, who are already facing a daily battle against ableism and discrimination.
Sia has continued to silence voices of those who speak out about how this film is offensive, harmful and overall garbage. Listen to the voices which are screaming out that this movie is horrible and is not deserving of ANY award or accolade.
Do not support Sia and do not watch this movie.
It is not worth your time or money.
