The movie was really cute. Younger kids might have the nuances in the plot go over their heads (I know I didn't really understand a lot of the movies I watched as a little kid) but there's still enough of a wonder aspect for them to enjoy it. It's refreshing to see more movies not having a focus on romantic relationships, and it's nice that this movie included it. (Yes, the main character is gay, that made me really happy, but for the record he and his boyfriend didn't even kiss). The story includes topics like generational trauma, environmental awareness, and choosing to live for yourself rather than your parents. All in all these were all well handled topics. The complaints about the LGBT and interracial couples are just people choosing to focus on the wrong thing. They are so inconsequential to the plot of the movie that they could be removed entirely and the story would be the same. It's just nice that it feels so normal and ignored, because it really isn't the big deal it's being made out to be.
