Firstly, I had fun watching watching these first two episodes. I like the characters and was intrigued by where the plot was heading. My problem with the series is that the essence of the story is not Lovecraftian. The general idea of a Lovecraft story is that the protagonist (usually a reliable narrator such as a professor) follows the threads of a mystery that ultimately leads them to an 'old one'. The old ones being ancient gods who predate humans and are infinitely more powerful. The very sight of these beings, or even just the evidence of their existence, is enough to drive the protagonist mad, sometimes even leading to their suicide. Within the first episode of the series our heroes are attacked my numerous monsters who are neither that scary or God-like. Add to that the magic element in the second episode plus the idea of a portal to eden and you end up with something that flies on the face of Lovecraftian lore. To me all the these things don't matter if the intention is just to create a monster/magic series but why call it 'Lovecraft Country' if you're just going to ignore all the tropes that make Lovecraft Lovecraftian?
