While satisfying on a cultural and political level Roth's tale gets the history entirely wrong. Europe's millions of Jews were betrayed not by a fictional fascist Lindbergh party but by an antisemite called FDR who along with his State Department refused to admit Jewish refugees or to bomb the rail lines leading to the extermination camps. Moreover the mainstream Jewish leadership went along with Roosevelt adamantly opposing any public expressions of dissent from the Democrat Party's policy of inaction.
