I did not expect much from this story because I don’t see the chemistry between Bae Suzy and Nam Joo Hyun just looking at the trailer, but to my surprise it was one of the best k-drama I’ve watched so far. The beautiful and inspiring storyline against the fresh and trendy backdrop of the tech industry portrayed by amazing actors/actresses just moved me that I cried several times.
For one, the characters are well developed and relatable. Do-san, though presented as a genius in coding has many flaws. Han Ji- Pyeong, a handsome, business genius has an unhappy childhood and zero love life. The contrast between the two of them- one who is lost and sails without a map and one who does not take action unless he knows he’s going to win is also well crafted. The contrast between the motivations and values held by Injae and Dalmi are well presented and portrayed. Even the minor characters are well defined and consistent.
It shows different types of relationships in a way that is subtle, natural and realistic. The best one of course is the relationship between Han Ji Pyeong and Halmoni. It is so comforting. The wonderful friendship and brotherhood shared by the three tech developers are heart-warming. The animosity between the sisters, Injae and Dalmi which developed into respectful rivalries is typical but relatable. The loving relationship between Dalmi and Halmoni and the estranged/distant mother-daughter relationship are well portrayed.
Lessons on love, relationships, family, friendship, and what it takes to follow/ achieve one’s dream are some of the things that will definitely make you reflect on your own life and relationships.
Of course, other things like having women CEOs, a glimpse on how the tech start ups are built from the ground up etc are some of the refreshing issues that I enjoy in this drama.
It is definitely a must- watch k- drama!!!
