Unfortunately, families play favorites that can't be hidden, such as naming the younger daughter Echo. Parents can love their children, but get too lenient as the children get older. I never saw family dinners, any meaningful dialogue between the parents, and none between parents and daughters so something bad was bound to happen. Unintentional parental neglect could lead to this kind of tragedy, and the movie could have been loosely based on actual events. I've seen true stories written poorly, but this movie was done well enough to be a good eye opener.
