Ok so I wrote a review at the beginning and gave it two stars, but now giving it three. This show was no where near amazing, but the first season is over. It truly was an origin show. The characters are not the ones we know and love, but as the season went on it was clear that it was setting it up for future episodes and for the characters to morph into the normal Mystery Inc Gang (or a version that is close to the original).
Fred started the "Spooky stuff van" (aka Mystery Machine), Velma was shown to be a good detective and did the whole "my glasses" bit and Norville had an experience that will likely lead him to start smoking. My assumptions is that if there is a next season, there will be a time jump and we will see them come together to create the mystery inc team.
We have to remember that we don't really see how the team comes together in the originals, just what they are going through. I think it's a fun / different take to show HOW mystery inc comes together. Otherwise we'd just be getting another version of the scooby doo show which we've already had 5+ versions of (SD where are you, be cool SD, SD mystery inc, The SD show, guess who scooby doo, etc). It was also kind of fun to see some random conversations they would have cause in these other ones it was always this: scooby/shaggy want to relax, something spooky happens, they try to solve the mystery, daphne gets taken, fred does the plan and shag/scoob are used as bait and then velma solves the mystery. It was nice to see something similar but still a little different.
I will say, some of the scenes / jokes don't land. it almost makes me cringe with how woke or stupid it tries to be at times (and i'm someone who is all for wokeness. I don't care about the changing in races, LGBTQ+ storyline, etc. that doesn't bother me). But at times it was a little unnecessary.
Do I love this show? No. Do I like it? Sure, it's fine. I hope that if there is a S2, they will take the time to listen to feedback and make changes to make it better.
