I might have been living under a rock because I wasn't familiar with this colony and didn't know the backstory was based on true events. It took me forever to feel grounded with the storyline. I thought this was a fictional period movie and didn't understand it. Reading upon it after watching it made so much more sense and I get the premise now. I feel like I was robbed a potentially good movie experience because I didn't know how to place what was happening. Don't assume the audience knows of the real events which weighs heavily on the viewing experience.
