‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ was ….. Meh.
I’m a big fan of the film and this stage version doesn’t even come close. It (very) loosely follows the same plot but the main medleys of the film have been removed and replaced with an array of mashed up pop songs. Brittney, Beyoncé, Pink, Outcast, Katy Perry & Lorde to name but a few. I eye rolled MANY times.
We also didn’t get a very consistent experience with the sound up on the royal balcony. Most of the time the singers voices sounded quiet and very weak. There seemed to be no power in Christian’s voice at all and Satine very much outshone him during ‘Your Song’.
The actual acting in between musical mashups was dire. What in the GCSE drama was going on with Statine’s illness throughout & that death scene!
10 out of 10 must be given for the set however. It was stunning! Incredibly well thought out and executed. Same goes for the costumes. But overall, I was disappointed by the show which was, essentially, a Moulin Rouge themed Karaoke night.
A separate note for the theatre itself…. If you’re going to sell standing tickets, you need some stewards up there to keep control of the patrons. We had a gaggle of wine fuelled ladies who would not stop talking, moving and clapping along (at the wrong times) One even kicked an empty glass along the wooden wall half way through. They were not once told by staff to keep it down or be respectful of other people.
The seats in this theatre are also the single most uncomfortable seats I have ever experienced.
