When everyone was saying how great "Crazy Rich Asians" was, I didn't quite get it, or couldn't relate to any of the characters despite being a Chinese myself.
But this movie, mannnnnnnnn, as bonkers and absurd the plot was, I somehow could relate to the characters, despite living in China I have never dealt with the IRS. There are so many tiny little details throughout this movie, that would make a real Asian person nod, and smile, and resonate. When Crazy Rich Asians came out, it failed to create a wide impact in the Chinese market, many critics were saying, because the characters were based on the American versions of Asians, and not so much on the Asian-Asians. Then you have <Everything, Everywhere, all at once>, the story is based in the U.S., the daughter herself was born and raised in the U.S. and could bared speak any Chinese, they are so magically relatable - the mom and daughter conversations about Joy getting fat, the way Chinese people always like to bargain for something more, the small racist jokes - WOW !!!! JUST FXXXKING WOW !! These tiny details are so insignificant to the overall plot, and in most cases, wouldn't be understood by the Western audiences, yet the Daniels put so much effort into it, and portraited them so unapologetically! How do you even do that?
