Just like Brimstone, watching this film expertly unfold, one can sense there is something afoul in the first few minutes. As you are caught in the suspense and are drown closer and get more involved with the film your senses are overcome by the ever increasing foulness, violence and inhumanity of the antagonist and other characters; after all, you can only get so close to Brimstone before the stench overwhelms and takes over your other senses.
To truly appreciate this movie the viewer needs to believe in the sordid view of the past depicted by the director/writer. The savage, barbarous behavior that existed in a lawless world of the early settlers of America.
Brimstone is well directed and structured, your mind is curious and sustained in suspense, however, it is a long movie and we can only linger for so long with the overwhelming stench. The sad truth is the ugliness and brutality of the past depicted in Brimstone is prevalent in our society today.
