This is kind of one of those classic teen drama type genres, and im typically not a fan.
That being said - this show was so incredibly well done. I feel like in the era of "diversity" we get shows that are stuffing POC characters for the sake of it - shows/movies that claim to represent a culture without being accurate or relatable whatsoever (see Kims convenience, CRA, and the last seasons of Fresh off the boat)
The main lead is relatable on a personal level as a great example of your average teen - she cares about popularity, she's imperfect, she's angsty and always unhappy with her mom's parenting. She's sensitive and insensitive.
On top of that, I feel like the show does a great job of portraying the classic 1.5 gen indian american experience (although im not indian, its very similar to my experiences as a KA). From the parenting culture, the parent-child dynamic, the beliefs, the emphasis on college, the "cant date until youre in college" it felt so real. I feel like this is how "diversity" shows should be done!
