I was struggling to concentrate in the begining because I'm not a huge fan of a 1st POV narration, but oh boy, that's exactly why this book turned out to be a great read.
When I started it I thought it was going too slow, and, since the story unfolds between past and present chapters, I initially thought that the past was being too boring and in the way of the main plot, but as the story progresses you see every piece fall into place and the big reveal is very satisfying, in my opinion.
Personally, I think this book will hit harder to people that, like myself, had a lot of expectations on their shoulders from their parents/family, and if you're like me, it will leave you thinking about the main protagonists' actions and all the what ifs of what would you do in such situations.
