I can give this movie a clap for its sets, cinematography and costumes, it works really well to give to the general atmosphere, and I love the idea...but, it did not do it for me. I love traditional English but not in this movie. At points the speech, the facial expression and overall editing, the editing especially made me deeply uncomfortable. Not only do I believe it would have been a far better choice for them to just translate it to modern English for the sake of viewer understanding, it would have faired better for younger audiences. How a lot of the lines are acted, can be seen as antagonistic, or in most cases overly acted. While Shakespeare original piece was one of drama, of tragedy, there were moments of calm, which is very much devoid in this movie. All of the dialogue to me seemed disingenuous, and not to mention hitting you over the head, it, to me is far from natural. It actively dampens its own message, its tragedy, by seemingly trying too hard. The pacing is off, the romance is off set by the large age difference in the actors, who are always wet for some reason I do not understand. It is displeasing to sit through, it is uncomfortable to watch them talk to hear them talk, which at times you can barely understand under the noise, or accents. For a romance it makes me want to scream, because all I can think of is how creepy Romeo just kinda acts. But enough of my ranting. It’s not for me, might be for you, but as someone who gets anxious around the mere 5 year age gap between the actors, I do not recommend. I have many problems with this movie, and I don’t agree with how much praise it gets. Good day.
