I'm gonna make a prediction with this one...I have a feeling this movie is gonna bomb but end up being a low level cult classic. This movie pulls from a lot of sources, but reminds me most of a few particular 80's (and one notable 70's) cult classics. I think James Wan shows some love to Sam Raimi style moviemaking here, as well as an appreciation for some of the more gonzo storytelling that I personally love, but know most fans may not be ready for. That said, if you are a fan of The Evil Dead series or movies in the body horror genre, this is a movie unlike anything modern directors have had the nerve to try in probably 2 decades. I applaud Wan for his audacity with this one.
