Misrepresentations in the Media
Body
The coronavirus is only a recent sickness that has started to spread greatly, especially in the media. The virus originated in China and therefore has led people to associate it with the local people. Because of this association, both Chinese and Asian people are being discriminated because of something they could not control. An article written by Isabella Kwai from The New York Times spoke about another newspaper that called it the ‘Chinese virus’ which clearly shows that the fear of the virus is being pinned on the Chinese people even though it is a virus anyone can get. Because of these media misrepresentations, the public starts to see things the same way, and will also name the coronavirus an Asian thing.
Because of the coronavirus’ recent outbreak, it has caused many cases of Asian people being bullied and discriminated. People have been assaulted for what they look like, whether they actually had a chance of being sick or not. One case of this was in London, Jack Guy from CNN wrote about a 23-year-old Singapore man who spoke about racism linked to the coronavirus after getting facial injuries. Jonathan Mok said that one of the men assaulting him said: "The guy who tried to kick me then said, 'I don't want your coronavirus in my country', before swinging another sucker punch at me, which resulted in my face exploding with blood (from my nose)," which is just one of many cases and different types of discrimination. There is lots of verbal assault that are affecting people. I myself have heard people shouting prejudiced terms at strangers.
