Helen Searing

I love most Spanish movies, especially those that involve Basque country, as did this one. But the plot is ludicrous and difficult to follow: I had to write down the twisted family relationships that muddle the bizarre plot.

Although I am an atheist and find this series very strong on the Protestant dogma, I also find it an absolutely brilliant examination of the personal and political problems we all face in our current society. There is nothing simplistic or black-and-white about the dilemmas the characters confront in their daily lives; the complexity of issues and responses is given full consideration and diverse points of view are presented fairly and fully. This is one of the most important and consequential TV series I have seen in a long time.
