I loved reading this book for so many reasons, firstly, as someone of Asian origin I could identify with some of the issues Akala mentioned, secondly and more importantly, I thought I knew a bit about black history but this book completely opens your eyes on the truth and the extent of the lies that have been previously told and thirdly, it provides a very deep dive into the experiences of Akala and those around him. I wanted to go back in time and give the 5 year old Akala a heart-warming hug when I read about some of his early experiences at school which really upset me. When I finished reading this book I wanted to go back and reread it as I need to make notes this time on all the things I learnt but I can't at the moment because I have highly recommended it to my daughter and husband so will have to wait until they finish reading it.
