We need to know people, not by simply what they look like, but by their actions, their feelings, and how they treat others. This deformed man was given some degree of dignity by Hopkins character of the doctor who cared. A shame, the doctor didn't meet Mr. Merrick earlier. Nonetheless, it did happen to him before he passed at the age of 27. A sad tale with some wonderful moments.
