Besides the fact that I was riveted to the story after the first few chapters, the novel taught me about empathy. I feel ashamed that I thought I was empathetic, but I learned there is a difference between my definition of the word and what it truly means. White privilege is so very blind to our fellow sisters and brothers. I appreciate this lesson learned.
