The movie Raajneeti is an uncanny modern twist to the epic Mahabharat tale which all Indians can recognise instantly, while the rest of the world needs more time and knowledge to appreciate. The Mahabharata itself is probably both the Iliad and Odyssey combined, and then some; Tolkien, Rowling and George RR Martin can’t spin a tale as convoluted, drunk on power and full of life lessons. Condensing that epic into a 3 hour Bollywood film about the woes of the Indian political system, weaving dynasty, violence, role of women, and relationships takes some doing, and Prakash Jha and his team have done a tremendous job about it. Individual scenes definitely pay homage to the Godfather, without an iota of doubt; but the main story is definitely a modern Mahabharat, ensconcing itself in the myriad games being played by a political family, which is much too common in India, certainly easily identifiable. This movie will become a cult classic in another 10 years.
