When I was scrambling to choose a film in October to watch I did not expect to find "The Trial of the Chicago 7" and was interested in the film after seeing "The Social Network", considering the writer wrote both those films and was directing this new film. I thought honestly that the Chicago 7 (as I am going to call it) was a pretty good movie and had a lot to tell me.
I think that the Chicago 7 was a great film in the writing category, acting ensemble, and picture, but, had a bone to pick with the directing.
But now let's get into it.
I believe that the writing in "The Trial of the Chicago 7" was just a brilliant script and I learned about someone that might be special (David Dellinger). The screenplay was so well thought out and had a great time listening. Then the acting. I thought Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmanye, and Frank Langella's performances were all Oscar worthy nominations (including Mark Rylance), they all had great inflection and did well. Then the DIRECTING... My biggest issue with Chicago 7 was easily the directing, the direction was horrendous and so bad when I saw the film for a 2nd time. I actually read the script for the film and was straight up the same thing as the script, no changes were made and made me a little upset. I personally thought Aaron Sorkin is such a great writer, but has no experience in directing which is the entire point of directing. I still liked it.
For the Oscar's it was nominated for, I believe it absolutely did not deserve cinematography and deserved to go to "First Cow" or better "I'm Thinking of Ending Things". I do think that the rest of the nominations were deserved especially editing and writing including picture and supporting actor, but also not song.
Wow though, it was tough though for the film.
Besides directing and song and cinematography, I thought the film was a pretty great film and was excellently edited and written, so I wasn't bored, with the acting, the film elevated my opinion on it because of tone, but the film is more close to a big 3 and small 4. I still think it is very rewatchable.
It was a pretty cool movie and learned a lot.
