I thought the tale was a complete muddle. A very weird portrayal of the children, women, and all the men in the town. It went nowhere and was full of not so hidden ridicule. The silence of the animals was the most rewarding part. I abandoned the book, having skipped most of it. What was the point ??

It was full of Hilary Mantel's view of Tudor England. Totally confusing with all the plotting and spite against this or that courtier or spy sent to root out] as much trouble as possible. Wo betide anyone who wishes to make sense of this time in our history. Henry Viii was a vain silly man besotted with his desire to have a son. So many deaths and lack of common humanity to others, especially the breeding females he snared. The delusions of grandeur he had made him into a dreadful human being. Lickspittle courtiers were as much to blame in their desire to be promoted to high positions at court. Hopefully things have changed since then !! I ploughed through this tome and was glad when I reached the last page. Confused and disappointed by all of it.
