Joker, a movie which has been gaining popularity since the day it was announced, continuing the legacy of Heath Ledger, who played the villain Joker(The Dark Knight) in a way, no one has ever did, and might ever will. After Ledger’s demise, the role certainly needed recognition, didn’t it? This led to a villain, getting a standalone movie of his own. Now, the difficult task was to get an actor, that play the character in a way like Ledger did. But the movie in no way feels empty or bland. It has flawless acting, strong music score, great direction, which gave the movie its own recognition, and we can certainly say, that’s it’s a proper modern cult classic.
The movie tells about Arthur Fleck, a loner who works as a Clown Mascot for an advertising company, struggles to get a good life, and aspires to be a comedian, like his favorite talk show host. He suffers from a disease, which makes him laugh without any control. All these circumstances make him an ignored loner in the society, until the day he was given a gun by a coworker, and shoots three men, who were bullying him on a subway. Arthur also seemed to find dark humor and violence funny, in his own way. The story then leads to how he has problems against a billionaire of the city, Thomas Wayne, with his own mother, and also, just the concept of society. The killing of the men on the subway became a subject for riots, due to Wayne’s statement, and after he is revealed in the end for being the person who killed the 3 men in a talk show, Fleck kills the host he used to admire so much, and becomes a symbol of the riots in the city, thus gaining his desired recognition in the society. The plot also leaves a couple of unanswered questions, according to the perspective you look at it, but that is probably for the best, cause sometimes such small things can make a the movie watching experience even better.
The role, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, was flawless, which got him to win an Academy Award for best actor and he can greatly be compared to even the greatest portrayal of Joker in the Dark Knight, by Heath Ledger, who even earned an Academy Award for himself posthumously. In the movie, we also have great Award-winning veteran actor Robert De Niro, who played Murray Franklin, the Talk show host. The movie also portrayed the entire plot in a great sequence, thanks to great direction by Todd Philips. The movie also won the Academy Award for Best Music Score, which was much well deserved. The way the movie portrays the dark side of society and shows it through a villain’s perspective is something which is rarely seen in modern cinema. This movie completely revolutionizes the comic book genre, and may even change people look upon the superstitions the genre has developed.
I would give this movie a 9.5/10
