The gameplay was utterly lack luster. Without any spoilers I'll say that the story was enjoyable and it was nice to see the story play out. Going strictly based on gameplay it was one step forward and a million steps back. The removal of interactive maps was greatly dissatisfying as that was a very fun feature from Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11. It was such a fun thing that we saw it be incorporated into both Injustice games. I was greatly disappointed to see that it was removed. The characters have a very limited set of moves now. It looks like each character gets only one fatality or two. Unfortunately they aren't able to be customized like how it was in the previous MK 11 game. Customization in this game is feels greatly reduced and limited. We aren't able to customize the movesets on our characters which added for unique and fun encounters while playing online back in 11. That's what added to the fun of Mortal Kombat. Not only could I make my character look different from my opponents same character but I could also make my character play differently than my opponent and have different loadouts set. It made it neat playing against others. In this new game all we get to customize are the mask, weapon, color of the outfit, taunts and finishers.
Now the step forward was adding Kameo Fighters to provide assistance to the player during fights and the return of The Air Kombat combo system. A feature that was featured in both Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. It's been a great while since we've seen that feature and it was nice having that feature back. But these alone weren't enough to make the game better than 11.
MK One isn't worth the price tag. I should have never bought the game full price. A new regret I get to live with.
