SPOILERS!!!
I thought the game was spectacular. Yes, the loss of Joel so early on was hard to swallow. I was angry. But you'd have to be a fool to believe that BOTH Joel and Ellie would survive in Part 2. TLOU is infamous for making the player feel uncomfortable and even downright dreadful at times, and sacrificing Joel was their way of doing that. Having to play as Abby for the 2nd half of the game felt a little drawn out and clunky at times but it was necessary in order to create the yin-yang dynamic between she and Ellie and their individual reasons why they're both hell bent on revenge and what they are willing to do to exact that revenge. I mean, it is a 24+ hour long story mode, I'm not sure how anyone can complain about that if you are truly bought in to the story like I was. The ending was haunting. It had such a sense of existential dread due to the game's overall theme of cynicism and uncertainty, but that is why I love TLOU so much. The story and the characters stick with you long after you are done with the game.
