I read the original Saga as a teen and it's amazing how many times I've been teleported back to my old classroom after picking this book up; I'm now nearing 30 and was quite shocked to find that this story still held just as much intregue to me now as it did that kid in the classroom.
As one of those people who've been waiting for this book since that original leak of it so many years ago, I was shocked when I found out last week it had managed to release this year without my knowledge! I ordered a copy immediately and it arrived Saturday afternoon; I finished reading it before I'd gone to bed on Sunday.
I'd had a look at a few reviews while I waited for it to arrive and was prepared to be disappointed. I was *NOT* disappointed!
This was everything I'd hoped for and more; there is so, so much more story and insight to be had here and it pulled me in instantly.
I've never come across a "chase scene" that's managed to convey it's self so thrillingly in print before! Honestly, it's such a brilliantly written segment that I found myself pulled out of the story just to marvel at the fact.
Personally, after reading this I regret that the story wasn't originally told from Edwards perspective as I found it so much more interesting than Bellas, though I completely understand why the original choice was made. It may also reasonably be that 15 years more writing experience has significantly improved Meyer's skills to give me this opinion.
Its quite upsetting to realise that it's so unlikely we'll ever get the rest of the story from this perspective because there is so much value in it, though I feel unreasonable to complain about it when it's clearly been such an extensive undertaking for Meyer to release this one.
While I believe this is better than the original Twilight book I'm not sure if I would recommend reading this one before Twilight or not. I'm currently trying to resist the urge to read the two of them together, switching between the two books as I go, as it feels like it's written in a way both books could be amalgamated into one coherent tale this way; perhaps that's an undertaking for my next week off work...
I expect to have finished it again before the weeks out, just to be sure I haven't missed anything and have managed to take the whole thing in, it really is that good!
