Let go of any historical fidelity and treat the period as a setting for a timeless satire. It's a comedy, sad and silly at once, with a notably English brand of humor. It took me a few episodes to accept the artists' world, but once I did, every character became more vivid. It may not be great art, but it's great entertainment.
