Excellent historical piece set in New France during the early colonial era. The series follows a variety of characters, the main focus of the show is on the ambiguity of a pillaged French settlement and the multiple characters attempting to unravel the truth or cover it up. The show did huge justice in portraying the brutality of frontier warfare, something I feel is whitewashed or passed over in other media.
If I had to give a critique, it would be the French accents. Many of the actors clearly struggled to maintain this and it unfortunately reflects on screen; with them slipping back into their native voice.
Putting aside this inconvenience, the cast was well chosen and the sets believable. I quite enjoyed the two Hudson’s Bay agents: Gnomes and Hamish. Unfortunately we will not see more of the duo as I have heard reports that the show will not be renewed for a second season. A common fate for historical dramas.
Regardless of this Barkskins is still very much worth a watch if you hold a interest in this period of history. This is what Jason Momoas “Frontier” should have been.
