This movie knows what it is: a rom com with a young target audience. It's cheesy with an indie pop score and everything you expect from a film with this title and this cover art. It's a fine story and there was a good attempt at clever cinematography. It's a fun time, not to be too taken seriously, and (I think) this generation's "My Best Friend's Wedding." I should mention: there is a serious lack of Asian representation in the media. This movie shows a young Korean American woman living a typical American teenager lifestyle. This is a rare thing to see in American television and just for that, it is worth the watch.

"Stargirl" gives light to the inherently important theme for young adults of "embracing individuality." However, the quirkiness of the character Stargirl along with the unrealistic optimism the high school extras have towards her quirkiness gives this movie a "manic pixie dream girl" vibe that is frankly, painful to watch at times. Stargirl is painfully quirky, but I enjoyed the use of color and lighting.
