One of my friends recommended this movie to me and I was very interested in watching because of the cast (Joaquin Phoenix, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams) as well as the director/writer for this movie; Paul Thomas Anderson. When I first watched this movie I was very confused. I know that it is loosely based on the idea of scientology, even though Paul Thomas Anderson claims its not, but I do not know a whole lot of the concept. After watching it a few times I started to understand more that it was about trying to find a purpose in life for Joaquin Phoenix's broken character; Freddie Quell, a WWII veteran with a PTSD like condition. Phoenix played the role of Freddie very well and rightfully earned the Oscar nom for best actor in a leading role. Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Lancaster Dodd (The Master); a writer, doctor, and a cult leader of "The Cause." Hoffman delivers such a powerful performance as Lancaster and should have won the Academy award for best supporting actor in 2013. Amy Adams as Lancaster's wife was also a great performance and should have also gotten an Oscar win the same year for best supporting actress. The movie is beautifully shot, once again P.T. Anderson does great with the setting. The reason why I wouldn't give this movie a 5 star is because it dragged a bit at times for me, some of the subplots I didn't fully understand. The ending was a little confusing. But overall a pretty good movie and quite unique. Would recommend if you enjoy the concept of cults/beliefs and those of you who like Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
