Overall I enjoyed the movie, but could not find any sympathy for Heston's character Major Dundee. He expected obedience from the confederate troops but he in return gave nothing or even a little respect for their efforts. In the end he dragged his men under his command to a pointless and inglorious death, fighting Apaches and French lancers. I thought Richard Harris's character a much more able leader and honourable persons. Was this film trying to say that war is a terrible and senseless waste of human life?

Absolutely recommend this film ,it should be re released and shown to a new audience.The black and white cinematography is splendid ,and John Hurt as The Elephant Man brings compassion and respect to a grotesque disfigured real life person,John Merrick in the back drop of Victorian England.I rate this film as one of the best films of recent times,a must watch,a classic movie that leaves a lasting emotional impact .
