A Long-time Pokémon Fan’s Fair Review
I didn’t let myself judge the game until I had tried it. I’m heading towards the champion now, so I think it’s safe to share my opinion. I’ve previously played every main series Pokémon game.
The good:
>> The wild area and camping are great, it’s fun to explore freely! I love seeing Pokémon outside of the grass like in Let’s Go, and putting together curries for my team.
>> Gym battles are good, dynamaxing is more entertaining than I was expecting.
>> I like the level of character customisation, not the best in the world but good enough for Pokémon.
>> The game looks like it’s a better quality, there has been at least some improvement there.
The bad:
>> I find myself frustrated by the story. So far it is incredibly weak, events keep getting mentioned but I’m not invited to explore/fight the issue, the champion fixes everything. I don’t know the ending yet, but it won’t make up for this poor story leading up to it. I don’t enjoy feeling like a background character in a game.
>> The quality is better, but not nearly where it should be. Some of the animations are good but a lot are .... just strangely bad. I don’t understand why a game as big as Pokémon would have such bad animations, not smooth at all.
>> Quite glitchy? Autosave issues plus the y-comm/online features, a major part of the game, is broken and hasn’t been fixed yet.
>> The game feels incomplete. I was willing to overlook the lack of Pokémon if it would lead to a better game, but as previously mentioned, the animations and story are not at the standard they should be.
Overall:
Worth playing if you have the money to spare, new Pokémon trainers will love it, older Pokémon trainers will enjoy it but feel like there’s just something missing. It’s a fun game, but disappointingly, feels rushed and unfinished. To leave a thumbs up would just be my bias talking, so I can’t. I can only hope they learn from their mistakes and the next gen is better.
